Swedish racer Peter Ljung has SGP 2020 in his sights as he prepares to go for glory in the Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations Finals in Togliatti.
The Vastervik favourite joins forces with world No.3 Freddie Lindgren and under-21 star Filip Hjelmland as the Swedes take on champions Russia, Poland, Germany, Great Britain, Australia and Denmark.
Ljung heads to Russia in red-hot form. He’s currently top of the Polish First Division averages for Tarnow and has starred for Vastervik in the Elitserien.
When people have asked me before if I wanted to be back in the GPs, I have always said that if I could step it up and be one step better, I would want to.
He has booked his place at the GP Challenge in Gorican on August 24, where the top three earn places in SGP 2020.
Ljung has only raced one full SGP season in 2012, finishing 15th in the World Championship with 57 points. But with the 36-year-old in the form of his life, he would love another shot at the sport’s top prize.
He said: “When people have asked me before if I wanted to be back in the GPs, I have always said that if I could step it up and be one step better, I would want to. If I was in the shape I was two years ago, there was no need to be in there. I’d have only been scrapping for third and fourth places.
“With it like it is now, for sure I could do something there if I could keep the level up that I’m at now.
“Obviously that’s the goal and plan I have – to keep this level and then we could probably do something there. I know it takes the really high level I have been at now, otherwise you go nowhere in the GPs.
“We have the GP Challenge and we’ll give it a go and see what happens there. It’s the form on the day. I have done quite a few GP Challenges and I have done some really good ones. I have still been a point or two short a few times. You just need that day where you produce five heats on form.”
