Torun hero Chris Holder roared into form with a fantastic 15 points, but couldn’t save his side from a 51-39 loss at home to Czestochowa in the PGE Ekstraliga on Sunday afternoon.
In a meeting marred by a high-speed spill for Torun top gun Jason Doyle, who was taken to hospital with a broken rib and punctured lung, the Lions proved too strong in the 2017 world champion’s absence.
But Holder romped to victory in his opening five rides to make a timely return to form ahead of a potential Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations Race Off 2 call-up, should Doyle be unable to ride in Manchester on Saturday.
His brother Jack bagged a useful seven paid eight as he held the fort in Doyle’s absence, while Niels-Kristian Iversen scored a straight seven.
Danish racer Leon Madsen led the Lions scorechart on 10 paid 12, with Swedish icon Freddie Lindgren adding 10 paid 11. Adrian Miedzinski came back to haunt his hometown team on nine paid 10 and Matej Zagar raced to seven paid nine.
In the day’s other meeting, Slovak star Martin Vaculik made a triumphant return to former club Gorzow, racing to 13 paid 14 points to inspire their arch-rivals Zielona Gora to a 49-41 victory.
Vaculik sparked uproar when he swapped the Edward Jancarz Stadium for Falubaz during the winter – crossing enemy lines in one of world speedway’s fiercest rivalries.
But he did his talking on the track, dropping just a single point in his final outing to home hero Bartosz Zmarzlik, who led the hosts’ scorechart on 12 paid 13 points. Vaculik was backed up by 10 paid 13 from Piotr Protasiewicz and 10 from triple world champion Nicki Pedersen.
